McKay: Taking steps towards a more sustainable workplace

McKay Sustainability

Why Sustainability Matters

Sustainability is about finding a delicate balance between meeting our present needs while ensuring that future generations can meet theirs. With the growing concern over climate change and the depletion of natural resources, it has become even more critical for companies like McKay to step up their efforts in implementing sustainable practices.

Our Approach to Sustainability

At McKay, we implement a comprehensive approach towards sustainability. This approach involves not only reducing our carbon footprint but also promoting sustainable practices throughout our value chain. Here are some of the key initiatives we have undertaken:

1. Clean Energy Generation: The installation of rooftop solar panels at our Whangarei head office allows us to harness the power of the sun and generate renewable energy on-site. This reduces our dependency on traditional energy sources, such as fossil fuels, while also offsetting approximately 60% of our office’s energy and EV charging needs.
2. Reduced Carbon Footprint: Both the rooftop solar array and the deployment of electric and hybrid vehicle fleets contribute to a significant reduction in our carbon emissions. By adopting these sustainable practices, we actively work towards a low carbon energy future, contributing to the global fight against climate change.
3. Social Responsibility: At McKay, we recognize that our actions and decisions have a broader impact on society. By embracing sustainable practices, we are taking responsibility for our impact on the world and striving to make a positive contribution to society.
4. Energy Hardship: Through our partnership with Empower Energy NZ we have committed to regular donations of surplus solar energy from our Whangarei head office. This program operates on the concept of converting surplus solar energy donations into cash donations, which are then distributed to low-income households. By sharing our surplus solar energy, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing energy poverty and contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future.
5. Partnerships & memberships: McKay’s membership with New Zealand’s Hydrogen Association means we will be at the forefront of advancing the development of low emission hydrogen production and use opportunities to advance New Zealand’s transition to a low emissions economy. As a member of SEANZ, we have a platform to promote sustainable energy and engage with wider stakeholders on the importance of transitioning to a low carbon energy future.

McKay Renewables

Following our success with major sustainability projects across New Zealand, we’ve demonstrated our commitment to leading the way in the renewable energy sector. Building on our expertise and achievements, in 2019, we launched our sub-brand ‘McKay Renewables‘. This sub-brand is dedicated to providing innovative renewable resource services, including solar energy solutions, electric vehicles (EVs), marine electrification, and sustainable marine electric vehicles (MEVs). With McKay Renewables, we continue to push the boundaries of sustainable technology and accelerate the transition to a cleaner, greener future.

The future aheads

As we move forward, McKay remains resolute in its commitment to the development of sustainable solutions and a low carbon energy future. We will continue to drive innovation, embrace emerging technologies, and collaborate with like-minded organizations to find viable and scalable solutions to global sustainability challenges. By doing so, we not only contribute to a better environment but also create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
