Te Matau ā Pohe bridge – Lower Hatea River Crossing

To reduce congestion in the Whangārei central business district, McConnell Dowell and Whangārei District Council formed a partnership to construct Te Matua ā Pohe – the lower Hatea river crossing. Crossing a tidal river estuary, the 265m long bridge has reduced CBD congestion by 8000 vehicles per day since its development.

McKay was contracted for the design, supply and build of the electrical and control works, which included:

  • Provision, installation , and design of lighting and electrical systems along the bridge
  • Design, supply, and installation of electrical and mechanical system for bridge control
  • Supply and installation of specialised control systems for lighting systems
  • Installation of cabling and cabling support systems
  • Connecting the bridge electrical systems to power supply

The complexity of the project highlighted the need for McKay to go above and beyond the normal scope of work. The project required innovative, lighting design and control systems integration to properly deliver to Whangarei residents. The public now enjoy a bridge that displays a fabulous night-time light display.
