The Project
McKay has been managing Tauranga City’s street lighting network since 2016, building nearly a decade of experience maintaining one of the Bay of Plenty’s largest urban and rural lighting networks. Covering over 13,000 luminaires and poles, the contract spans a broad geographic footprint requiring consistent service delivery across both urban centres and rural roads. The long-standing nature of this relationship reflects the confidence Tauranga City Council has placed in McKay to maintain a critical public asset reliably and to a high standard, year after year.
Project Deliverables
McKay’s scope covers the full maintenance and operational management of Tauranga City’s street lighting network.
Our Approach
Nearly a decade of continuous delivery on the Tauranga City contract has given McKay a deep understanding of the network and what it takes to service both urban and rural infrastructure at scale. Quality has been maintained throughout via McKay’s ISO 9001 QA system, backed by site audits, RAMM data verification, and pre-completion inspections. Initiatives such as live on-site data entry and non-destructive pole testing have further improved asset information accuracy and reduced future quality risks, keeping defect rates consistently low.
On programme, McKay has consistently met or exceeded KPI response times for both scheduled and emergency works, supported by a dedicated 24/7 call-out team. A notable example of McKay’s resilience came during the TCC LED rollout, where a six-month delay in material supply was absorbed without impact to the overall programme, achieved by resequencing works and optimising workforce allocation to keep delivery on track.
The experience and systems developed here directly inform how McKay approaches similar contracts across New Zealand, helping bring proven, efficient solutions to each new council relationship from day one.
