South Waikato District Council LED Street Lighting and CMS Control System Upgrade

McKay was contracted to upgrade the South Waikato Council’s existing streetlights to LED technology and implement a Central Management System (CMS) for controlling the lights. This project was undertaken alongside our regular maintenance of the street lighting in the district.

The upgrade aimed to reduce power usage and extend the lifespan of the council’s streetlight assets. It included the lighting of local areas and state highways in Tokoroa, Putaruru, Tirau, and Arapuni, resulting in the replacement of a total of 2,026 lights within the South Waikato region.

McKay scope of work included:

  • Planning and scheduling of the lighting upgrades across each area
  • Supply and installation of new LED light
  • Supply and installation of new cabling for streetlight
  • Implementation of a new CMS control system to allow for centralised control of the street lighting network
  • Opening a new Tokoroa branch and the retaining of extra local staff to assist in the project

The CMS control system, paired with LED lights, enabled the South Waikato District Council to adjust street lighting as needed. This allows for dimming in residential areas to minimise light pollution and brightening in busy public spaces to enhance safety and visibility.
