The Project
McKay serves as the principal contractor for Porirua City Council’s street lighting network, managing a comprehensive scope that spans routine maintenance, LED upgrades, pole and luminaire renewals, lighting design, and emergency response. The relationship with PCC is a collaborative one, since the contract’s inception, McKay has worked alongside council to reduce costs, improve luminaire reliability, and drive safety and energy efficiency improvements across the network. As principal contractor, McKay also draws on learnings and innovations from its other major street lighting contracts around New Zealand, bringing best practice and operational efficiencies directly to Porirua.
Project Deliverables
McKay’s scope covers the full management and maintenance of Porirua City Council’s street lighting network.
Our Approach
McKay’s approach to the Porirua contract goes beyond maintenance — it is an active partnership focused on continuous improvement. By sharing innovations and best practices across McKay’s portfolio of major street lighting contracts in Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, and Porirua, the team consistently identifies opportunities to enhance performance and reduce cost for PCC. This includes leading investigations into asset life extension and deploying smart technology like the Vimalux monitoring system to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Non-destructive testing methods are also employed where appropriate, ensuring safety and sustainability are embedded in how the work is delivered, not just what is delivered.
