Porirua Streetlighting Maintenance Contract

The Project

McKay serves as the principal contractor for Porirua City Council’s street lighting network, managing a comprehensive scope that spans routine maintenance, LED upgrades, pole and luminaire renewals, lighting design, and emergency response. The relationship with PCC is a collaborative one, since the contract’s inception, McKay has worked alongside council to reduce costs, improve luminaire reliability, and drive safety and energy efficiency improvements across the network. As principal contractor, McKay also draws on learnings and innovations from its other major street lighting contracts around New Zealand, bringing best practice and operational efficiencies directly to Porirua.

Project Deliverables

McKay’s scope covers the full management and maintenance of Porirua City Council’s street lighting network.

  • Streetlight Maintenance & Upgrades: Routine maintenance, luminaire and pole repairs, outreach and bracket replacements, and LED upgrade programmes across the network.
  • Pole Inspections & Renewals: Ongoing pole inspection programmes and asset renewals, including investigations into extending the operational life of existing assets to maximise cost savings for PCC.
  • Lighting Design: McKay provides lighting design services as part of the contract, supporting both renewal projects and new installations across the district.
  • Vimalux Traffic & Environmental Monitoring: McKay is responsible for the installation and ongoing management of the Vimalux traffic and environmental monitoring system in Papakowhai, which actively adjusts energy usage based on real-time vehicular and pedestrian traffic data.
  • Asset Management & Compliance: Full RAMM data management and AMDS compliance, coordinated with council for approvals and audit readiness across all assets worked on the network.
  • Emergency Response: A 24/7 callout service ensuring prompt response to faults and incidents, meeting PCC’s safety and emergency response standards.

Our Approach

McKay’s approach to the Porirua contract goes beyond maintenance — it is an active partnership focused on continuous improvement. By sharing innovations and best practices across McKay’s portfolio of major street lighting contracts in Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, and Porirua, the team consistently identifies opportunities to enhance performance and reduce cost for PCC. This includes leading investigations into asset life extension and deploying smart technology like the Vimalux monitoring system to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Non-destructive testing methods are also employed where appropriate, ensuring safety and sustainability are embedded in how the work is delivered, not just what is delivered.
