Connecting with future talent in Kawerau

McKay Kawerau careers expo

The event, aimed at students from Years 7 to 13, is designed to expose students to a range of career options, networking opportunities, recruitment options, and industry trends.

Representing McKay at the expo were Branch Manager Alex Bruintjes, and Administrator Shoshanna Richmond. Alex and Shoshanna filled their stall with interactive activities that allowed students to experience a glimpse of life at McKay. Students had the opportunity to try on full PPE and have a go at hands-on wire stripping, gaining a sense of safety measures and skills required in the electrical industry.

Students were also able to take away McKay’s Capability Statement, copies of our magazine, Ngātahi, and our careers brochure, for further research into what McKay has to offer. Additionally, students had the opportunity to ‘spin and win’ prizes from the stall, including pens, lollies, charging cables, paddle ball sets, and drink bottles. The excitement of not knowing what they would win made it enjoyable for the students.

Participation in career events, throughout New Zealand’s schools, is crucial for McKay, as it not only creates connections with potential future talent but also cultivates awareness about the diversity of career options available within McKay and the broader industry.

With the rapid evolution of job markets, initiatives like the Careers Expo play an essential role in preparing students for their future.
