Water treatment and wastewater projects
Mangawhai WWTP and Remote Pump Stations
Water Infrastructure Group recently delivered the $60 million Mangawhai Ecocare Wastewater scheme for the Kaipara District Council.
The scheme provides a sustainable wastewater system for approximately 1,200 homes with capacity to service 4,500 properties in the future. The Ecocare scheme includes a small footprint water reclamation plant, a 180 mega litre storage facility for reclaimed water, 13 pump stations and a large number of grinder pump stations servicing properties.
McKay was responsible for the design and built of the electrical installations, instrumentation and the control systems for this project.
A key driver of the “build, operate and maintain” contract between the council and our client, Water Infrastructure Group, was a total life-cycle view of the project and an understanding of the need for innovation and collaboration to develop leading edge solutions.
This meant that we were able to focus on technologies that delivered the most economical life cycle cost, whilst delivering a solution that met capital budget requirements.
The control system utilised is Telemecanique Premium PLCs, and a Citect SCADA system. Each of the 13 pump stations in the Mangawhai area are connected to the central treatment station via IP based cellular modems; data and alarms for each pump station are transmitted over the cell phone network to the operators at the central treatment station.
We believe it to be the first use of IP based cellular modems for this application in New Zealand.
Whangarei Heads Pumps Stations
McKay supplied and installed 15 new pump stations for the new Whangarei Heads Waste Water Treatment system. This system links the Whangarei Heads area into the main Whangarei sewage treatment system. This new system caters for over 2,900 people. To avoid overflow, each pump station has a back-up pump, and can send alarms remotely to a service technician should immediate, on-site maintenance be required.
Kawakawa WWTP and Pump Station Upgrade
McKay undertook the supply and installation of electrical, instrumentation and control systems for the Waste Water Treatment system upgrade in Kawakawa, Northland. We supplied switchboards, MCCs and PLC panels, complete electrical installation and cabling. McKay designed and programmed PLC/SCADA system on a Rockwell CompactLogix PLC platform.
