SY Hemisphere has been completed by the Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth and has been exhibited at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show. SY Hemisphere has an overall length of 44.2m (145ft) and a gross tonnage of almost 500t, making it the world’s largest luxury sailing catamaran. Hemisphere spent this season in the Mediterranean and will return for summer 2012, before heading out into South Pacific in early 2013.

McKay had the pleasure of working closely with the Hemisphere team; providing switchboards and electrical design support. McKay were closely involved in the electrical design from early in the vessel’s build; ensuring that the electrical systems met class regulations, making the jobs of the crew easier and ensuring that the owner can enjoy the vessel to the fullest.

The Defence Industry Awards are an annual event promoted by the Defence Industry Committee of New Zealand and sponsored by the Ministry of Defence, and the NZDF, to highlight and reward the contribution made by industry to the New Zealand Defence Force.

The 2010 Minister of Defence Awards of Excellence to Industry dinner was held in October. 2010 saw a number of very strong contenders being nominated and the decisions required of the Assessment Team and Judging Panel were challenging. McKay Electrical Ltd were rated very highly in the “Excellence on an ongoing basis, especially in the supply of services to Defence” area.

The Assessment Teams report stated: “A strong relationship has been forged between the RNZN and McKay’s that exists as a true partnership on a working level. They are always flexible in working around the RNZN’s schedule and the relationship has been enhanced further since the delivery of the IPV’s.”

McKay have acquired the businesses of MGE New Zealand Ltd, and MSL Auckland Ltd.

Whangarei-based electro-technology company, McKay Ltd, has acquired the switchboard interests of the MacArthur Group, considerably expanding McKay’s switchboard capabilities.

McKay CEO Lindsay Faithfull said McKay had acquired the businesses of MGE New Zealand Limited and MSL Auckland Ltd.

“By adding the considerable resources of MGE and MSL to those of McKay Switchboards, we’ve further enhanced our position as an already substantial player in the switchboard industry in New Zealand,” he said.

Further, McKay will now be in a position to offer a complete portfolio of services ranging from engineering and design, manufacturing and testing to installation and commissioning services.

The combined operation will further provide McKay’s customers with greater flexibility and the choice of three manufacturing locations in Auckland and Whangarei. Staff numbers in this new McKay switchboard division will be over 35.

Mr Faithfull said the current MGE/MSL management team, headed by Ted Ashby and Ian Trout will remain in place, as will the McKay Switchboards management team headed by Michael Wright.

The new McKay Switchboard division will be managed by Graeme Bratty who has been with McKay for over 15 years.

The McKay switchboard division will be able to provide a wide range of high-quality switchboard systems and services. Low voltage switchboard systems include Powerak, Pricepac, Cubic, Techno, Prisma Plus P, Prisma Plus G, and custom made IP65 outdoor panels. Ratings are available up to 7,000A and 120kA RMS. MGE also manufacture Schneider Electric medium voltage switchgear.

MGE is the former Schneider Electric manufacturing division that was the amalgamation of Merlin Gerin (originally A&G Price) and Telemecanique (originally Turnbull & Jones). A number of the staff are from the original Turnbull & Jones and A&G Price companies, bringing a wealth of technical and practical experience. MGE/MSL have a total staff of 25.

McKay is a 70+ year old electrotechnology company with its origins in Northland and a staff of 130. Its fields of expertise include engineering and design, automation, switchboard manufacturing, installation, and maintenance. McKay works predominantly in the industrial, dairy, marine, petrochemical, timber, power generation, and infrastructure sectors and exports to a wide range of countries, including the United States and the UAE.

More than seventy years ago McKay started out as a small town retailer of electrical appliances. McKay has now grown into a well respected electrical technology company delivering excellence and innovation across a range of markets within New Zealand and internationally.

Our strategy continues to be one of building on our successes to achieve sustainable growth and a current focus is to further expand our central North Island operations. We already have a market leading position in the streetlighting sector with an increasing profile in commercial and industrial electrical contracting. We are also steadily leveraging our national process, control and instrumentation experience into the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and South Auckland markets.

As a key part of our growth strategy we have recently appointed Peter Lingley to head up our Hamilton based operations. A degree qualified Electrical Engineer, Peter has a twenty year track record of successfully delivering capital projects and maintenance contracts on time and to budget while fully meeting customer expectations.

Most recently working within the New Zealand electricity distribution industry Peter’s experience has encompassed working at airports, oil refineries, major construction sites, generation facilities and high voltage transmission networks around the world. Peter’s approach is one of working in partnership with customers to build and maintain sustainable and mutually beneficial relationship.

Since joining McKay a few weeks ago Peter has enjoyed meeting up with our major customers and is looking forward both to continuing to develop further win-win opportunities with them as well as growing the central North Island business towards its full potential.

Peter’s contact details are as below and he would welcome the opportunity to discuss how McKay may be able to assist current and prospective customers with their electrical installation, maintenance and servicing needs.
